General techniques for using wheelchairs

Wheelchair suppliers recommend that patients must master basic movements such as operating the brakes, removing armrests and footrests, and lifting their hips forward while using the wheelchair. They should also be able to pick up objects from the ground and move their hands to the footrests to secure the toe guards. Patients and their families should learn techniques such as pushing wheelchairs on flat ground, pushing wheelchairs on slopes, and climbing up and down stairs.

(1) Self use

1. Push the wheelchair on flat ground

When pushing the wheelchair on flat ground, keep your hips steady, balance your body, tilt your head up, and move forward. Move your arms backwards, slightly bend your elbow joint, grab the back of the wheel ring with your hands, move your arms forwards, and extend your elbows. At this point, the body slightly tilts forward and repeats multiple times, as the forward momentum generated by the upper body enhances the strength of the arms.

Wheelchair backwards on flat ground:

(1) Wrap your arms around the chair back between the handlebars and place your elbows on the manual loop.

(2) Tilt back and lower your shoulders so that your arms can use enough force to push the wheels backwards. For those who cannot push the wheelchair up a slope, this method can also be used to reverse the wheelchair up the slope.

(3) The hemiplegic patient's affected limb is coordinated with the health test to promote wheelchair movement.

2. Push the wheelchair on the slope

(1) Upslope: lean forward. Place both hands at the top of the manual loop, extend the wrist joint backwards, flex the shoulder joint and retract to push the wheel forward. By changing the direction of the wheels to intersect with the slope, the wheelchair can also stand on the slope.

(2) Downhill: Stretch your head and shoulders, and apply the handbrake. You can place both hands in front of the wheels or place one palm bone under the manual ring to brake while maintaining wrist extension.

3. Change the wheelchair direction to turn to the left as an example:

(1) Place the left hand behind the manual loop;

(2) Rotate the left arm slightly outward to transfer body weight to the inside of the wheel through the left hand;

(3) Rotate the right wheel backwards with your left hand, while turning the right wheel forward with your right hand in a normal posture.

(2) Auxiliary use

1. Forward or backward:

① Four wheel landing method: The wheelchair is pushed horizontally or landed on all four wheels.

② Two wheel landing method: The steering wheel is empty, the large wheel lands on the ground, and the wheelchair tilts back 3 mines to push or pull.

2. Going up the stairs:

① Two rounds of landing method, drag back up the steps.

② Pull the handle downwards and backwards, step on the tilt lever, turn the steering wheel up the steps, and move the handle upwards and forwards. Then, roll the large wheel up the steps and push it forward.

3. Going up and down stairs:

① One person style, two wheel landing method, drag backwards, step by step up. Going down the stairs is the opposite.

② Two person style, same person style, with the other person assisting in front of the wheelchair.

③ Four person style, same person style, two people in front and two people in front of and behind the wheelchair, coordinated and consistent.
